Original Item: Only one available.
This original Sperry Gyro Compass, produced by the Dodge division of Chrysler Corporation, was located on the flying bridge of the USS Las Vegas Victory (AK-229). Patented in 1919, the Sperry Gyro Repeater displayed the heading of a ship so that crew members could tell which cardinal direction the vessel was pointing.
The USS Las Vegas Victory was a WWII Victory ship that saw much action in the pacific theatre, being involved in operations around the Caroline and Marshall Islands as well as the invasion of Okinawa, where it dodged Kamikaze attacks while shuttling ammunition between battleships, aircraft carriers and destroyers. After the war the ship was put into mothball, where it sat until scrapping in 1993. Before scrapping valuable equipment was removed by MARAD, including this compass, and put into storage before being sold at public auction in Washington in the early 2000's.
The electrical cord on the compass has been cut. This is a valuable piece of WWII history, and would be a great addition to any collection.
