History of the RMS Mauretania: A Marvel of British Ocean Liners

The RMS Mauretania, an iconic British ocean liner, was a testament to remarkable design and engineering. Designed by naval architect Leonard Peskett and built by Swan Hunter & Wigham Richardson, it operated under the esteemed Cunard Line. This famous vessel earned its place in history by holding the prestigious Blue Ribband for the fastest Atlantic crossing for an impressive span of over 20 years.

During World War I, the RMS Mauretania was requisitioned by the British government and served as a troopship and later as a hospital ship. Despite opposition from devoted passengers, including the renowned President Franklin D. Roosevelt, the ship was retired in 1935 and sold for scrap, marking the end of its illustrious career.
